As our societies are in desperate need for answers to our systemic global crises including the climate disaster and biodiversity loss, industrial and input-intensive agriculture and food systems are under increased questioning. Decades of green-revolution technologies and policies have homogenized agricultural landscapes, which are both affected by, and reinforcing the converging social-ecological crises. Agroecology is an alternative approach to the food system. It is a transformative science, a set of ecologically sound and socially just practices and an emancipatory social movement, both in the global North and the South.
In this lecture, Prof. Dr. Johanna Jacobi introduces her past research on organic agriculture and agroforestry, as well as current research with the Agroecological Transitions Group at ETH Zurich on food democracy, urban agroecology, agrobiodiversity, and deliberative food policy.
